Important Japanese-style Planter Attributed To Gabriel Viardot, Longwy Enamels

Rare and elegant Japanese-style planter from the late 19th century, attributed to Gabriel Viardot (1830–1906), one of the most famous Parisian cabinetmakers specializing in Chinese- and Japanese-inspired furniture.

Crafted from finely carved precious wood, it rests on a base featuring dynamic cutouts joined by an openwork crossbar. The apron is richly decorated with carved foliage and features a chiseled bronze lion mask at its center, while the crossbar is adorned with an elegant openwork grille featuring a second bronze element.

The front is embellished with five magnificent Longwy enamel panels, featuring a polychrome design of flowers, birds, and wading birds on a turquoise background, in the purest Japanese style. The delicacy of the design, the richness of the colors, and the characteristic crackle finish of the enamels attest to the quality of this work.

The interior retains its original zinc planter, perfectly integrated, designed to hold plants.

The combination of Émaux de Longwy panels with a piece of furniture inspired by the Far East is characteristic of the prestigious creations of the late 19th century. The quality of the cabinetmaking, the richness of the carvings, and the harmony of the proportions bring this planter close to the works of Gabriel Viardot, though attribution must be treated with caution in the absence of a mark.

This piece is a superb example of the enthusiasm for Japonism during the Third Republic and will naturally find its place in a collection of art furniture or a refined interior.
