18th-century French School – Wild Boar Hunt – Oil On Canvas

A major hunting scene depicting a wild boar hunt in a forested landscape. The composition features, in the foreground, an imposing wild boar being pursued by dogs, while a hunter armed with a long rifle follows the chase. Other hunters and dogs appear in the middle ground, creating a succession of scenes and lending the composition remarkable depth. A figure perched in a tree, along with the hunters positioned at various levels of the landscape, accentuate the theatrical and almost anecdotal nature of the scene. The painter pays particular attention to the animals’ movement and the tension of the chase. The landscape, built around large trees and a vast, luminous sky, echoes the characteristics of 18th-century French hunting painting.
