Artist: Marie Laurencin (1883-1956)
Marie Laurencin (1883–1956) – Watercolor "Les Biches" – Design for Francis Poulenc’s famous ballet

An elegant original watercolor by Marie Laurencin (1883–1956) depicting a composition titled "Les Biches", inspired by the world of the famous ballet created in 1924 for Serge Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, for which the artist was commissioned to design the sets and costumes.

The work features two exquisitely delicate female figures rendered in shades of pearl gray, blue, and black—colors characteristic of Marie Laurencin’s poetic and instantly recognizable style.

The dark silhouette of the doe provides structure to the composition, while the lightness of the washes lends the entire piece a dreamlike and refined atmosphere.

The watercolor is signed Marie Laurencin in the lower right corner and presented with an elegant mat within a substantial carved and gilded wooden frame.

This composition is reminiscent of the studies and illustrations created by Marie Laurencin for "Les Biches", a major work in her career associated with the Ballets Russes and composer Francis Poulenc.
