Oil On Canvas: Port Of Saint-tropez By Louis Haas (1870–1923)

A beautiful oil-on-canvas painting, *Marine*, depicting a sailboat off the coast of Saint-Tropez. Beautiful colors. Early 20th century.
The wooden frame with gilded stucco is also very beautiful but shows signs of wear when viewed up close.
The canvas has just been thoroughly cleaned.

Douay Louis Désiré Haas was born on August 19, 1870, in Philippeville (now Skikda) in Algeria and died on February 6, 1923, in Bandol (Var). Originally from Algeria, he left North Africa in 1891 to try his luck in Paris, where he began his career as a decorator in several studios. Noticed by Gaston Vuillier, he was sent to the Austrian court, where Archduke Louis-Salvador of Habsburg-Lorraine entrusted him with the education of his children. He accompanied the Grand Duke on numerous trips to Spain, Italy, Egypt, and elsewhere, which allowed him to explore much of the Mediterranean and paint many works there, a large number of which were stolen from him upon his return to France.
In Paris, he befriended the painter Louis Eugène Baille, whose student he became. Baille steered him toward animal painting. In 1906, he returned to Philippeville, Algeria, where he painted numerous landscapes and seascapes. He lived modestly, without worrying about the sale of his works. Appreciated for his bold and harmonious colors, he exhibited in his hometown in 1907, as well as in various cities across Algeria alongside other Orientalist painters such as Maxime Noiré, Léon Geille de Saint-Léger, Gilbert Galland, and Louis Randavel.
His works are now held in several collections, notably at the Skikda Museum (Algeria) and Constantine City Hall (Algeria)
