Etching By Jan Zrzavy, Portrait Titled "andèl" (engraving—20th-century Czech School)

Artist: Jan Zrzavy
A stylized female figure with wings, titled "Andèl" (angel), by the Czech artist Jan Zrzavý.

Jan Zrzavý (1890–1977) was a great Czechoslovak painter, illustrator, and printmaker, known as one of the leading figures of 20th-century Czech modern art, influenced by Symbolism, the Parisian avant-garde, and his numerous stays in Brittany. He was drawn to the old masters of the Renaissance, the Italian Primitives, and the modernist movement.
Nicknamed the “painter of dreams,” his style oscillated between Symbolism, Expressionism, and the geometric avant-garde, imbued with a profound melancholy. He traveled frequently to Paris and spent many years in Brittany, which inspired a large part of his seascapes and portraits.
