Large Secret Compartment Box Made From The 1718 Moreri Dictionary—18th-century Book, 18th

A significant and highly decorative box—a secret compartment—with an interior lined with marbled paper, created from Volume V of the Moreri dictionary, *Grand dictionnaire historique ou le mélange curieux de l'histoire sacrée et profane* (Great Historical Dictionary, or a Curious Blend of Sacred and Secular History), published in 1718.

Louis Moréri (1643–1680) was a French priest, scholar, encyclopedist, and genealogist. He is credited with compiling the first encyclopedia of proper names.

Contemporary full marbled calfskin binding; both covers are adorned with a large gilded oval medallion featuring small ironwork depicting a coat of arms beneath a count’s crown. The shield bears an anchor accompanied by two stars and a crescent, set within a rich frame of lambrequins and foliage. Coat of arms unidentified.

External dimensions: height 40.5 cm – width 27 cm.
Dimensions of the hidden compartment: height 33 cm – width 18 cm.

Good overall condition, some visible wear.
