Rare tin-glazed earthenware tilewith a cobalt-blue underglaze painted design depicting an elegantof chinoiserie featuring three figures: a dignitary, a servantkneeling beside him, and a third figure holding a fan or aceremonial insignia.

This particularlyrefined composition reflects the fascination with the Far East that developed in thethe United Provinces in the late 17th century under the influence ofChinese porcelain from the Kangxi period imported by the Dutch East IndiaCompany.

The very free treatment of thelandscape, the delicacy of the design, the monochrome cobalt decoration, and theunfinished reverse side are characteristic of early Dutchceramics, likely from Delft or Rotterdam, dating from the first decades of the18th century.

The motif, which is quite uncommon, doescorrespond to the most commonly found designs and is of realinterest to collectors of antique earthenware.

The tile was previouslyreused for decorative purposes, as evidenced by the four small holes drilledin the corners. These modifications are old and do not affect the qualityof the decoration.
