Bergama Kilim - Anatolia. Circa 1950. 115 X 72 Cm

This embroidered kilim from Bergama, in Western Anatolia, is distinguished by a perfectly balanced composition centered around two large geometric medallions connected by a central motif.

These two indigo-blue motifs in the shape of stylized “S”s evoke protection; they are sometimes interpreted as dragons.
Motifs symbolizing protection are also visible in the form of ram’s horns, hooks, and other amulets.

The design is framed by a wide, compartmentalized border featuring alternating chevrons, protective hooks, and small “S”-shaped motifs—elements emblematic of the Anatolian decorative tradition. The wavy friezes evoke water, a symbol of life and prosperity, while the hooks (çengel) serve as a traditional protection against the evil eye.

Its color palette, dominated by a deep madder red, an intense indigo blue, and a natural ivory, gives this piece all the graphic power and elegance of the finest weaves from the Bergama region.

Woven wool over wool, the weave is extremely tight and finished at each end with pretty, short braided fringes.
