André Galland (1886–1965)

The son of a sheet manufacturer, he was a French designer and illustrator. He was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1933, in recognition of a body of work that influenced his era. An eclectic artist, he also created earthenware, posters, and lithographs that are now sought-after pieces among collectors.

After studying at the Collège Rollin, the École des Arts Décoratifs, and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he abandoned his preparations for the Prix de Rome to enter the workforce. He turned to journalism and owed his early training as a sketch artist to Paul Renouard. A few yearslater, he became Renouard’s student at the School of Decorative Arts. He knew how to makethe most of an original drawing method, known as “bone points,” whichproduced true “pencil reporters,” skilled at capturing a blink of an eye. Galland describes himself as a “sketch artist reporter.” This, in fact, perfectly captures the spirit of his work at the Henriot Manufactory.
