French 17th C. Carved And Giltwood Frame With Grapevine Motif
Carved and Giltwood Frame with Grapevine Motif
France, second half of the 17th century
Dimensions:
Height: 90 cm × Width: 80 cm
Sight size: Height: 58.5 cm × Width: 47 cm
With later regilding
This sumptuous frame is distinguished by its broad moulding, lavishly carved in high relief with intertwined grapevines, vine leaves and clusters of grapes, animated by birds pecking at the fruit or perched among the foliage. The ensemble displays particularly vigorous carving, combining a naturalistic treatment of the ornament with a rich yet perfectly balanced composition.
The inner moulding is enriched with a border of stylised laurel leaves and bead-and-reel ornament, providing an elegant transition to the sight opening.
This type of decoration, inspired by the vegetal repertoire and the symbolism of abundance, is characteristic of French production in the second half of the seventeenth century. The quality of the carving and the richness of its ornamentation made this frame a fitting setting for a painting of distinction. Equally, its commanding presence allows it to be appreciated today as a work of art in its own right.
