Artist: Raphael Arnal (1906-1963)
"The Glimmers of the Night," from "Variations en l'air," black ink on paper by Raphael ARNAL, by R. Arnal, dated 1932.
Raphael Arnal (1906–1966), a Provençal Expressionist artist born in Languedoc, who studied at the Beaux-Arts in Montpellier. He exhibited in Montpellier, Avignon, Salon-de-Provence, Paris, and then for 14 years in Marseille, in the La Pintade neighborhood—which he often depicted in his work—and finally in Vence and Antibes during the last years of his life. He was a close friend of Max Jacob, with whom he exchanged a substantial correspondence that was later published by the journal *Massilia*.A complex figure in modern art, his painting is marked by powerful expression and intense colors, but he was above all a magnificent draftsman with a sure and precise line, as seen here in these highly detailed ink drawings on paper.
