Cabaret Scene – 18th-century Northern School, In The Style Of David Teniers

A charming 18th-century oil on canvas depicting a genre scene set in the rustic interior of an inn or cellar, a composition inspired by the 17th-century Flemish and Dutch tradition.

In the center of the scene, a man and a young woman are seated around a barrel serving as a table. The man, wearing a blue cap adorned with a feather, holds a pitcher and casually has his arm around his companion’s shoulders. She, dressed in an orange blouse and a long gray skirt, appears to be counting some coins or examining a small object, while various foods are laid out before them.

The painter meticulously recreates the atmosphere of a working-class home: barrels, baskets, jars, copper vessels, fabrics, and household items fill the surrounding space. On the right, a large copper basin, stacked baskets, and several containers accentuate the picturesque and anecdotal character of the composition.

The figures stand out against a deliberately dark background thanks to light focused on their faces, hands, and clothing. The color palette, dominated by browns, ochres, and grays, is delicately enlivened by the blue of the man’s headdress and the orange tones of the woman’s clothing.

Through its subject matter, staging, and treatment, this work follows in the tradition of cabaret scenes and peasant interiors popularized by David Teniers the Younger and his followers, whose compositions enjoyed great success throughout Europe until the 18th century.

The painting is set in an elegant antique carved and gilded wooden frame, adorned with an interior frieze of pearls. Some imperfections, touch-ups, and wear to the gilding are visible, consistent with the age of the piece.

On the reverse of the stretcher is a large antique red wax seal, partially preserved. Its design appears to depict the coat of arms of the city of Saint Petersburg: an imperial scepter surmounted by the double-headed eagle, accompanied by two crossed anchors—one maritime and the other fluvial, shaped like a four-pronged grappling hook.

The circular inscription remains difficult to read due to cracks and the crushing of the wax. This mark could indicate that the painting was once part of a collection, an administrative office, or an institution in Saint Petersburg during the Russian imperial period. However, this identification must be treated as a hypothesis until the inscription can be fully deciphered.
