Large Travel Case For A Bottle, Made Of Turned Boxwood, With Its 19th-century Bottle
Here is a very large and rare 19th-century bottle holder made of turned boxwood, featuring a most pleasing patina. Various turned boxwood cases were designed for travel and were very often used by country doctors on their travels. To create sturdy containers before the advent of plastics, people had a choice between leather and wood; the latter being more durable, particularly boxwood, which is ideal due to its slow growth, resulting in a very fine grain that allows for threading that stands the test of time, as is the case here. This piece was turned with a knot still present, so its small crack is unavoidable.
