Gabriel Dauchot (1927–2005) was a painter of portraits, landscapes, and still lifes, as well as a lithographer. Expressionist style. A student of Othon Friesz and Yves Brayer at the Grande Chaumière studios, where he began working at the age of fourteen, he participated in the “Moins de Trente Ans” and “Salon d’Automne” exhibitions in 1942.
Beginning in 1945, he held regular solo exhibitions in Paris, Switzerland, and the United States. He won the first Prix des Amateurs d’Art in 1952. He paints, in thick impasto, acrobatic figures, valets, newlyweds, melancholic landscapes, ironically grotesque funerals, and still lifes that are either old-fashioned or, on the contrary, sensuous. In the 1980s, he lightened his palette and gave free rein to his humor, creating compositions with great freedom in their layout.
Nicknamed “the painter of the human comedy,” he is associated with the figurative movement known as Jeune Peinture within the School of Paris.
