His work spans history painting, portraits, genre scenes, and religious subjects, with a predilection for luminous landscapes and intimate domestic scenes.
Education and Career
- Studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels.
- Awards and honors:
- 1892: Honorable mention in the Belgian Prix de Rome for *The Last Victims of the Flood*.
- 1893: Second prize in painting at the Godecharle Competition for *Comforter of the Slaves*.
- His scholarships enabled him to travel throughout Europe (Vienna, Munich, Berlin, Italy), where he studied the Italian Primitives.
- Marriage: Married Jeanne Defooz in Brussels in 1899.
