Diane de Gabies
An elegant bronze sculpture with a nuanced brown patina depicting the goddess Artemis adjusting her wide-sleeved chiton, based on the ancient marble sculpture attributed to Praxiteles (showing slight signs of wear).
The terrace is marked “Ré ion Sauvage” for “Réduction Sauvage,” a technique for reducing the size of bronze sculptures developed by Frédéric Sauvage (1786–1857).
Mounted on a sea-green marble base.

Discovered in 1792 on Prince Borghese’s estate at Gabies, not far from Rome, this ancient statue was sold by the prince to Napoleon in 1807. In the 19th century, the statue enjoyed great popularity, and copies were installed in numerous locations, such as the Cour Carrée at the Louvre, the Athenaeum Club in London, and the Botanical Gardens in Copenhagen. It is now housed at the Louvre Museum in Paris.
