Oil On Canvas, *self-portrait* By Miriam Rocher
Artist: Miriam Rocher
This painting is a self-portrait of the artist, likely in her home.
Miriam Rocher (1875–1971)
Her talent was recognized very early on; at the age of 14, she won the prize awarded by the Deux-Sèvres department and the city of Niort, which opened the doors to Paris for her, as she became a resident of the city for three years.
During this period, she took classes at the Académie de Dessin. She frequented Puvis de Chavannes’s studio and Antonin Proust’s salon, and became friends with Henri Martin.
He even painted a portrait of her.
She rarely attended Parisian salons, preferring instead the Union Artistique de Toulouse.
Miriam Rocher’s artistic output can be divided into two distinct phases. Her early period spans from her beginnings through 1903–1904, during which she produced, in particular, numerous portraits characterized by a bold yet delicate brushstroke;
then, starting in 1904, her brushwork became bolder and more vigorous, and her work more spontaneous. Miriam Rocher gave color a prominent role in her art.
