The Marly Horses – Pair of Patinated Bronze Sculptures, French 19th Century School after Guillaume Coustou

Description:

A magnificent pair of patinated bronze sculptures depicting Horses Restrained by Grooms, after the renowned models by Guillaume Coustou (1677–1746). Created in the 19th century, these works draw inspiration from the original marbles commissioned by Louis XV for the Marly park, now housed in the Louvre Museum (inv. nos. MR 1802 and 1803).

The anatomical precision of the horses, captured in dynamic motion, and the delicate drapery of the grooms’ clothing showcase exceptional craftsmanship. The rich, nuanced brown patina enhances the realistic rendering and expressive power of these pieces, emblematic of French art from the Grand Siècle.
