Hanuman - Votive Bronze, India, 19th Century Or Earlier
Bronze with signs of wear and minor chips—a folk art piece dating from before 1850. Mounted on a bronze base.
This is Hanumān, the monkey god and hero of the Rāmāyaṇa. He carries a club and a miniature mountain, in a dynamic pose with one knee bent and the other extended, evoking movement or flight. This depicts an episode from the Rāmāyaṇa: Hanuman bringing back the mountain with medicinal plants. During a war against the demon Ravana, Lakṣmaṇa, Rama’s brother, is seriously wounded. The physician requests a miraculous plant that grows only in the Himalayas. Hanuman flies off to find it, and, unable to identify the plant, decides to uproot the entire mountain so he can bring it back to the physician.
