Georges Briata, born January 5, 1933, in Marseille and died December 7, 2019, in Marseille, was a French painter.
He enrolled at the École supérieure des beaux-arts de Marseille. He won the Stanilas-Torrents Prize and the Poggioli Prize in 1947.
After transferring to the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris to prepare for the Prix de Rome—which he did not win—
he chose to pursue a more stable career by turning to the decorative arts, intending to become a set designer or advertising artist.
He placed first in the entrance exam for the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs in Paris in 1951 and graduated with a degree in mural art.
In 1955, he attended Marcel Gromaire’s studio, which would have a profound influence on his work.
In 1960, he became a professor at the École supérieure des beaux-arts in Marseille. Among the members of the competition jury was the sculptor Paul Belmondo.
He then met André Maurice at the Jouvène Gallery in Marseille, where he would exhibit regularly until 1990. He would go on to meet other painters, poets, and journalists such as Guy Charon, Raymond Guerrier, Eugène Ionesco, Albert Lauzero, André Roussin, Axel Toursky, and Jacques Winsberg.
As his success grew, he exhibited all over the world: Tokyo, New York, Montreal, Geneva, Beirut, Boston, Grand Rapids, Miami Beach, Lyon, and Paris. He became a member of the Marseille Academy of Sciences, Letters, and Arts on March 15, 2006.
