Transitional-period Nightstand - Attributed To Couleru
Curved, inlaid bedside table from the Transition period, with two doors, a side drawer, and red griotte marble.
The zebra-patterned marquetry and open-backed mahogany cube inlays, plum, and rosewood, along with the heart-shaped openings on the sides, are reminiscent of the work of Abraham-Nicolas Couleru (1717–1812), who was the first in a dynasty of illustrious cabinetmakers specializing in marquetry furniture.
He spent almost his entire career in his native Montbéliard, yet nonetheless enjoyed great success among the bourgeoisie of Alsace and Switzerland, as well as the German aristocracy.
