The Medici lions are two marble sculptures depicting lions that were originally placed on either side of the entrance to the Villa Medici in Rome. Each lion holds a sphere beneath its paw, a reference to the six balls in the Medici coat of arms. Originally installed in 1600, they were eventually moved in 1789 to the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence, although copies are still on display there.
