Strassburg: Silver And Silver Gilt Beaker, 1731–1736
- Tulip-shaped beaker
- Hammered and cast silver, in white silver and silver gilt
- Illegible silversmith’s hallmark
- Strasbourg, 1731–1736
- Height: 9.2 cm; diameters: 5.3 cm (base) & 8.1 cm (rim); weight: 140 g
- Beautiful condition of the patina, very good condition of the vermeil
- Tulip-shaped beaker rests on a pedestal with wide knobs edged by a molding. The interplay of contrasting colors between the exterior—the body and pedestal—in white silver and the interior in gilt silver, edged by a molding that is itself gilt.
- Based on this principle, two beakers from the “Vermeilleux” exhibition at the Kugel Gallery are cataloged: a goblet [2, no. 30] and a beaker whose gilded body contrasts with a band of plain silver beneath the molded rim [2, No. 31], a two-tone metal contrast already observed on a truncated shaped beaker known as a “Rathsbecher” (Sotheby’s Paris, auction of November 9, 2009, No. 257 “Timbale de margistrat en argent et vermeil”).
- Hallmarks (on the body): identification:13 within a band, in a shield surmounted by a fleur-de-lis, Strassburg, 1731–1736([2] Hallmark Directory)
