Virgin And Child. Terracotta. Late 16th Century. Le Mans School
Artist: Matthieu Dionise
Exceptional Virgin and Child
Terracotta bust, the upper part of a full-length sculpture that is now incomplete, with traces of polychromy and glaze runs.
MANCELLE SCHOOL from the last third of the 16th century, attributed to the workshop of Matthieu Dionise (sculptor active between 1581 and 1613)
H. 71 - W. 42 cm
Restored nose.
This terracotta sculpture depicting the Virgin and Child is comparable to certain works created by one of the earliest known sculptors of the Mancelle School, Matthieu Dionise. His career, brought to light by the catalog of the 2002 exhibition *Belles et inconnues: Terracotta Sculptures from the Maine Workshops, 16th–17th Centuries*, remains shrouded in mystery. His career is currently dated from 1580 to 1613, and only one signed work by him is currently known (Virgin and Child, terracotta, 1581, Bussière-Badil). Others are mentioned in archival records. Above all, our Virgin Mary can be linked to the two terracotta statues depicting a Virgin and Child and Saint Barbara, which were part of the rich decor of the chapel at the Château de la Rochère. The centerpiece of this decoration was a large terracotta relief now housed at the Musée de Tessé in Le Mans (terracotta, 160 x 80 cm, inv. no. 83-2), commissioned by Jean II de Vignolles, Lord of La Rochère, and created between 1572 and 1580.
