Henri Pontoy - The Oudayas Of Rabat-salé
Henri Jean Pontoy (1888–1968)
The Oudayas of Rabat-Salé
Oil on canvas, signed lower left.
A superb view of the Kasbah of the Oudayas and the city of Salé, dominated by their ochre ramparts and minaret, reflected in the waters of the Bouregreg River. In the foreground, fishing boats and a few figures bring the scene to life, bathed in light characteristic of Morocco.
Pontoy, one of the great Orientalist painters of the 20th century, devoted many works to Moroccan landscapes. His free brushwork, luminous palette, and interplay of reflections lend this composition an atmosphere that is both lively and timeless.
