Isidore Meyers, 1836–1916, a Belgian Impressionist painter of landscapes and views of the Scheldt. He was a student of J. Jacobs at the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. He lived in Paris from 1855 to 1858, where he associated with Corot and Daubigny. He exhibited for the first time in Brussels in 1860. Along with A.-J. Heymans and J. Rosseels, he was one of the progressive landscape painters of the Kalmthout School. While his early works straddled the line between Romanticism and Realism, he later evolved toward a freer style and a more vigorous brushstroke. Considered the founder of the Termonde School, this precursor of Belgian Impressionism sparked a movement in Antwerp advocating a return to nature, in opposition to academic teaching. Professor at the Academy of Termonde. Works in the museums of Brussels, Antwerp, and Verviers. Artist listed in the Bénézit (with a sample of his signature), the Arto (with a photograph of his work), and the Piron. Listed on Artprice, Artnet, and Akoun, etc...
