Whale-bone Corset, Regency-era Corset, 18th-century Women's Lingerie, Louis XIV
A rare and authentic boned corset from the Louis XIV–Regency period, dating from the early decades of the 18th century, circa 1700–1720.
An exceptional example of women’s fashion from the late reign of Louis XIV and the early Regency period, this antique piece retains its original structure as well as a remarkable patterned silk fabric.
The corset is made of brocaded silk fabric decorated with small polychrome motifs on a red background, characteristic of textile production from the late 17th century and the very early 18th century.
Its very elongated cut ends in a long point at the front, designed to support and flatten the bust in accordance with the aesthetic standards of the time.
It fastens with front and back lacing, retaining its embroidered eyelets and part of its lace. The wide shoulder straps and the inner linen canvas lining are original.
The bottom is cut into tabs, allowing the garment to hug the hips—a characteristic feature of boned corsets from this period.
The garment naturally shows signs of use and age: fabric wear, small tears, localized missing sections, alterations to the lower tabs, and previous restorations.
