Set Of Painted Canvas Fragments With Chinoiserie Motifs
Set of Fragments of Painted Canvases with Chinoiserie Motifs
France, late 18th century (circa 1770–1810)
A rare set of mounted painted canvas fragments from a major historic wall decoration, hand-painted in shades of blue on linen canvas.
The set consists of several decorative panels of various shapes, including two remarkable arched lintels adorned with Chinoiserie scenes depicting Oriental figures, pagodas, palm trees, garden pavilions, and floral garlands.
Very much in vogue in aristocratic residences and mansions during the second half of the 18th century, chinoiserie decorations reflect Europe’s fascination with the East and exotic decorative arts.
The various fragments display refined craftsmanship, with delicate designs and a masterful handling of light effects. The hand-painted work, executed in an elegant monochromatic blue palette, retains its strong decorative impact despite the signs of age.
The canvases clearly originate from a larger decorative ensemble that no longer exists, which lends them a unique and evocative character.
This set can be preserved in its original condition, framed individually, or incorporated into a high-end decorative project.
