Antique Terracotta Jar, Garden Ornament, Italy, 19th Century
We are offering this antique Italian terracotta jar, made in the 19th century. An object with unmistakable historical charm. This type of jar was produced in Italy’s olive-growing regions (Liguria, Tuscany, or Southern Italy). Given the absence of any imprinted marks, it is difficult to determine its region of origin with precision. Historically, it was used to store and transport olive oil.
The jar has a typical ovoid shape, rounded in the center and tapering gradually toward the base and the top. The upper rim features a characteristic glossy yellow-ochre glaze. Historically, this glaze served to prevent liquids from seeping through the porous terracotta and to protect the jar from insects. The main body is made of rough terracotta, light beige in color, almost sandy. The surface is uneven but shows clear signs of artisanal craftsmanship, irregularities, and small imperfections typical of handmade objects.
The jar is in good condition and features a distinctive patina, with whitish hues and surface discoloration due to exposure to the elements and the natural aging of the material.
This jar, with its historic charm, can now be used as a decorative garden feature, ideal both as a standalone sculpture and as a large planter.
