A charming oil-on-panel painting depicting a pastoral landscape brought to life by shepherds leading their flock in the foreground. The composition is centered on a vast, wooded landscape opening up to a view of an Italian village dominated by a bell tower, while in the background, mountains bathed in soft light come into view.
The remarkable attention to detail is reminiscent of a miniature.

The work follows in the tradition of the classical Roman landscape developed in the 17th century by Gaspard Dughet, known as Gaspard Poussin. It features the characteristic balance between idealized nature, rural architecture, and pastoral life, all within the serene atmosphere characteristic of Roman countryside landscapes.

The delicate color palette, dominated by greens, blues, and light ochres, as well as the hazy rendering of the distant landscape, attest to the lasting influence Dughet exerted on Roman painters of the late 17th and early 18th centuries.

The work is set in a beautiful antique frame of blackened, molded wood, perfectly suited to its character.
