Polychrome Barbotine Hanging Planter
This polychrome slip-glazed planter, designed to be hung, features a particularly intricate decoration. The body, with its broad lobes, alternates between fan-shaped reliefs, stylized shells, and radiating petals, with bold modeling that beautifully catches the light. The piece is enlivened by a vibrant color palette—turquoise, soft greens, and deep mauves—applied with great skill and without overdoing it.
At the center, a highly relief-defined apical knob—rendered as a fruit or a closed bud—serves as a visual anchor and reinforces the piece’s sculptural character. The antique metal chains ensure a stable suspension consistent with the period of production.
The enamel has remained fresh and luminous, with no chips or visible flaws, which is remarkable for this type of decorative slipwork. The underside shows clean modeling, typical of high-quality craftsmanship from the late 19th–early 20th centuries.
A decorative piece sought after for its relief work, its color, and its distinct “indoor garden” charm.
