Great 17th Century Mythological Painting, Hercules And Deianira

COD 01135

An important 17th-century Italian painting. This artwork oil on canvas depicts Hercules and Deianira, a fascinating episode from classical mythology. The scene shows the famous hero, depicted naked and bearded in accordance with iconographic tradition, carrying his wife Deianira on his shoulders, likely immediately after saving her from the attempted rape of the centaur Nessus. The group of protagonists emerges forcefully from a dark background thanks to a skillful use of light, which enhances the plasticity of the flesh tones and gives the composition extraordinary expressive power. The presence of a putto in the lower section adds a refined symbolic accent and enriches the mythological tale.

In terms of pictorial quality and stylistic conception, the artwork appears to fit within the great Italian Baroque tradition and exhibits characteristics that suggest a possible derivation from models by Luca Giordano or his school, a key figure in Neapolitan painting in the second half of the 17th century.

This is an ideal artwork for collectors of period paintings, lovers of classical mythology and Baroque art, capable of embellishing state rooms, libraries, professional studios, or historic homes with great personality. An elegant 19th-century Baroque-style wooden frame, carved and lacquered, embellished with a twisted molding and gilded leaf motifs, shows some signs of aging. The painting has already been restored with re-lining, replacement of the stretcher, and restoration of the color in small areas. There is a tear with loss of color at the top (see photo). Overall in good condition. Internal dimensions: H 129 x W 93 cm.
