Roger Capron (attributed To) – “herbier” Coffee Table Made Of Vallauris Ceramics
“HERBIER” COFFEE TABLE ATTRIBUTED TO ROGER CAPRON
Vallauris, circa 1965–1975
Magnificent ceramic coffee table attributed to Roger Capron, one of the most important French ceramicists and designers of the 20th century.
The tabletop consists of a remarkable assemblage of terracotta tiles adorned with naturalistic plant impressions. Leaves, grasses, twigs, and fragments of Mediterranean flora compose a veritable mineral herbarium, imbued with poetry and modernity. The variety of motifs, the subtlety of the reliefs, and the richness of the ochre, sand, terracotta, and brown hues attest to the craftsmanship for which the Vallauris workshops are renowned.
The composition is punctuated by black glazed areas that highlight certain tiles and reinforce the graphic quality of the whole. Each element contributes to a particularly decorative interplay of textures and contrasts.
The tabletop rests on a black-lacquered metal base with simple, elegant lines, perfectly balanced by the warmth of the ceramic.
This table perfectly exemplifies the aesthetic developed by Roger Capron in the 1960s and 1970s, centered on the themes of nature, plant motifs, and raw materials. Both a decorative work of art and a functional piece of furniture, it is now an iconic example of postwar French design.

Note:
This table is attributed to Roger Capron. Like many pieces produced in the Vallauris workshops from the 1950s to the 1970s, it bears no visible signature. Its attribution is based on the quality of craftsmanship, the decorative style, the plant motifs characteristic of the famous “Herbier” theme, as well as the techniques and materials used. Creations from this period were often produced in limited or semi-industrial runs, without being systematically signed individually.
A rare and decorative piece, sought after by collectors of French design, Vallauris ceramics, and the work of Roger Capron.
