Sculpture - Fisherman, Made Of Buffalo Bone, 20th Century
An imposing sculpture made of buffalo bone depicting a smiling fisherman carrying fish (carp) suspended from a flail and in his hand.
The structure is covered with bone plates that have been carved, fitted, glued, and then engraved. The engraved lines are highlighted with ink and pigments to create a sense of depth. The engraving work is remarkable, alternating between complex geometric patterns and stylized floral motifs (lotus flowers, cherry blossoms). The lower frieze depicts a lotus pond. Stamp on the underside, engraved in red ink with two Chinese characters; apocryphal mark (Qianlong); handcrafted in the Far East in the 20th century, circa 1950–1970. Available for sale without a CITES certificate.
In good condition, finely crafted, with a small chip.
