Their original purpose was to ward off evil spirits so they would not enter the home.
Here, the mascaron is carved from wood; it depicts a mask and fully fulfills its original function: protecting the premises.
The two mascarons were originally mounted on two cedar wood doors; see photos.
Each mascaron is decorated with a garland of acanthus leaves in carved mahogany wood and displays at its base a cartel bearing a calligraphed inscription.
