Sevres Porcelain Plate, Napoleon III Period
A rare and elegant porcelain plate from the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory of Sèvres, produced during the Second Empire and dated 1854. With its contoured shape and dynamic design, it features in the center a sumptuous naturalistic composition combining flowers, fruits, and insects, executed with great finesse of brushwork.
The design features a lush bouquet of roses, wildflowers, and delicately shaded foliage, embellished with clusters of grapes and various fruits. A few insects, rendered in the spirit of 19th-century naturalist studies, enliven the background and lend a touch of lightness to the overall design. This decorative richness reflects the taste of the Napoleon III era for abundant floral compositions and ornamental refinement.
The wide rim is coated in the famous Sèvres blue, of remarkable depth, accented by a gold fillet and a gold scalloped border that highlights the plate’s scalloped outline.
On the reverse, the piece bears the mark “S.54,” corresponding to the Sèvres Manufactory and the year 1854.
With its refined decoration and high-quality craftsmanship, this plate is a fine example of Sèvres production from the early Second Empire, as appealing as a collector’s item as it is as a decorative piece.
