Attributed to Paul Joanovitch: Superb Late 19th-Century Orientalist Oil on Panel, *The Snake Charmer*
A magnificent and luminous late 19th-century oil on panel depicting an Orientalist scene, *The Snake Charmer*.
The foreground features a figure with a theatrical and powerful demeanor, his arm raised, brandishing a reptile before the eyes of secondary figures sketched in the background
The handling of light, the liveliness of the brushwork, and the rendering of textures are the mark of an excellent academic painter
With its subject matter, dramatic tension, and lively brushwork, this vertical panel bears a strong resemblance to the compositions of the Serbian master Paul JOANOVITCH. We have not found a signature, so we are offering this painting as being from the school of Paul Joanovitch or in his style
Late 19th century, circa 1900
The raw wood panel attests to the authenticity of the period
Sold in its original period frame
