Large Oil Painting On Canvas, *herd Of Cattle*, Signed Watson W., 19th Century

We are pleased to present this splendid 19th-century oil on canvas. This magnificent, large-scale painting bears a signature in the lower right corner: Watson W. Below it is a date that is not entirely legible, perhaps 1896 (?). It is referable to the painter William Watson Jr. (1847–1921). The English Watson family comprises three generations of artists influenced by Rosa Bonheur, a French animal and realist painter, and by Sir Edwin Landseer, an English painter and sculptor known for his animal paintings. This painting is, in fact, a beautiful academic copy inspired by Rosa Bonheur’s 1860 painting “The Highland Raid.”

An extraordinary painting that celebrates the majesty of a herd of cattle. At the center of the scene is a herd of cattle typical of the Scottish Highlands, characterized by long horns and thick coats. A majestic bull with a golden/light-colored coat advances toward the right, while beside him stands a dark, black bull facing forward, creating a strong chromatic contrast. On the left, a flock of numerous sheep and goats with light, thick fleece moves in close proximity to the main herd. In the background, shepherds can be glimpsed holding the traditional staffs used to guide the animals. The surrounding landscape evokes Scottish moors and hills, beneath a blue, partly cloudy sky on the right.

Animal painting was extremely popular in the 19th century. This painting embodies pure 19th-century realism, with meticulous attention to anatomical detail and the texture of the animals’ fur and wool. The artistic quality is excellent, featuring visible, soft, and textured brushstrokes that capture the myriad shades of color.

This splendid painting is truly extraordinary. If you love 19th-century animal painting, you absolutely must add this marvelous painting to your collection. A breathtaking work of art that will enchant your guests!

The painting is accompanied by a magnificent 20th-century gilded wooden frame with relief decorations that complements it perfectly.

The painting is in excellent condition, with two small restorations visible in the photos of the back of the canvas. These minor restorations do not compromise the quality of the work.
