E. Mottheau Chandelier With Child Musicians, Bronze, 19th Century
Ernest-Louis Antoine Mottheau
Chandelier known as “Aux Enfants Musiciens,” made of chiseled, patinated, and gilded bronze, with six light arms in the form of foliage scrolls held in place by chains. The central shaft, shaped like a fluted column or a flaming torch, is adorned with acanthus leaves.
Leaning against this shaft, three child musicians playing flutes—whose lower bodies extend into acanthus leaves—support the entire composition. The upper part features spiral fluting surmounted by a flame.

Ernest-Louis Antoine Mottheau (1841–1905) began his career as a metal engraver
He founded his own firm at the age of 23 in 1864.
His bronze workshop, first located on Rue St Sébastien and later in the Marais district of Paris, produced chandeliers and candelabras.
The Mottheau firm participated in various World’s Fairs during the second half of the 19th century.
It received a grand prize in 1900.
