Curiosité Pomander Memento Mori Spice Box, Gold-plated Brass, Ref. 1151
17th-century German craftsmanship.
Small miniature spice and scent box in the shape of a Memento Mori,
it is made of mercury-gilded brass; the lower jaw is hinged and opens to reveal a compartment divided into six sections, closed by a lid. The lower jaw is engraved on the inside with an interlaced TS monogram and the date 1638. A loop allows this Memento Mori to be worn around the neck or on a belt.
These objects have been manufactured in Germany and Switzerland since the 16th century.
Dated: 1638
Condition: as found, good condition, traces of worn gilding on the surface; the mercury gilding is better preserved on the inside of the jaw.

Weight: 40 grams.
