Cast-iron Fireplace Plate With Coat Of Arms – 17th Century

A large 17th-century cast-iron mantelpiece, arched in shape, adorned with a remarkable heraldic design in high relief. At the center is a shield bearing an eagle with outstretched wings, supported by two standing greyhounds. The whole is crowned with a knight’s helmet surrounded by rich lambrequins, surmounted by a third greyhound forming the crest.

The composition, particularly balanced and vigorous, attests to the quality of heraldic castings intended for noble and seigneurial residences. The depth of the relief, the finesse of the details, and the substantial mass of the piece make it a decorative element of the highest order.

This plaque is distinguished by its exceptional thickness of approximately 8 cm and its weight of over 120 kg. The more pronounced wear on its lower portion is consistent with its original function and results from several centuries of direct exposure to the heat of the hearth.
