A pupil of his father, Gillis the Elder (1578–1632), and probably also of David Teniers II (1610–1690).
In 1654, he became a member of the Guild of Saint Luke in Brussels. In 1666, he was elected dean of this guild.
That same year, van Tilborgh became curator of the painting collection of the governor of the Spanish Netherlands (Flanders) and of Tervuren Castle (south of Brussels).
Around 1670–1671, he traveled to England.
