Biography:
Marcel Belle (1871–1948) was a French painter whose work, marked by sensitivity and modernity, is part of the Post-Impressionist movement of the early 20th century. Trained at the free academies of Montparnasse and a student of Henri Martin, he developed a personal pictorial language in which light and color play an essential role.
A recognized artist during his lifetime, he exhibited at the Salon d’Automne starting in 1920, then at the Salon des Indépendants beginning in 1926, before becoming an associate member of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1938. The prestigious Bernheim-Jeune gallery also dedicated a solo exhibition to him, a testament to the recognition he enjoyed.
His works poetically celebrate the landscapes of the Creuse Valley, the shores of the Basque Country, and certain Parisian vistas. Through broad, colorful brushstrokes and a refined composition, Marcel Belle captures the atmosphere and light with remarkable elegance, in a style that at times evokes the great landscape painters of his era, notably Albert Marquet.
The Work:
Through a harmonious composition and a subtle palette of blues, grays, and ochres, the artist captures the calm of the basin, the moored boats, and the village’s characteristic architecture, dominated by its bell tower. The simplicity of the forms and the masterful use of light lend this scene an atmosphere that is both poetic and timeless.
