Beautiful French miniature from XVIIIᵉ century depicting The Death of Lucretius, probably inspired by Guido Reni, whose engravings were widely distributed at period. Lucretia is depicted on tragic moment of her death, an ancient subject much appreciated in classical painting.
The rectangular, unsigned miniature is in very good condition. It was reframed the late 19th century in this 18th-century mercury-gilt bronze frame, weighing almost 500g, which is a successful reuse.
I simply opened the back of this rustic mount to remove dust and clean the flat glass.glass.
Miniature: 9.5cm x7.5cm, frame: 12.5cm x 10.5cm.
