Lead plaquette depicting the profile of Alexander the Great as Jupiter Ammon.
Italy, early 16th century, sometimes attributed to Giovanni Bernardi.

Dimensions: 37 x 30 mm

Very strongly inspired by ancient glyptics, this fine plaquette is faithful to the iconography of Jupiter Ammon, but according to an opinion shared by several authors (Molinier 1886, Middeldorf and Goetz 1944, Rossi 2011) it certainly depicts Alexander the Great in the guise of the god. It has been attributed by some authors to Giovanni Bernardi (Bode 1904, Donati 1989, Rossi 2011).

Other examples of this plaquette are preserved in museum collections, such as the Bargello (from the Grand Ducal collection, see catalog photo), the Art Institute of Chicago (see catalog photo) or the Louvre (see here : https://collections.louvre.fr/ark:/53355/cl010111356 ).
