Solid Silver Temperance Dish In The Style Of François Briot

Solid silver Temperance dish

Punch: later modified to pass the piece off as a 17th-century work.
Germany, 19th century

This magnificent goldsmith's piece is inspired by the masterpiece created in the 16th century by the famous medallist and pewter founder François Briot (circa 1550-1616).
In the center of the dish is the allegory of "Temperantia" (Temperance = one of the cardinal virtues), surrounded by the four elements represented in the guise of Roman deities: Terra = Earth; Nereid = Water; Juno = Air; Vulcan = Fire.

The border is designed in the style of openwork lace. Richly decorated with cabochons, mother-of-pearl and colored stones. Original leather case included.

Note:
The Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg also has a similar example in silver.
