Engraving Of The Town Of
Original engraving, on steel with burin. Hand watercolored.
After a drawing by GARNERAY(1783-1857), famous French painter, draughtsman and engraver. A former sailor turned artist, Garneray was one of the great specialists in maritime views under the Restoration and the July Monarchy.
Engraved by BRUNELIERE an engraver active in the first half of the 19th century, known mainly for engraving topographical views and landscapes after various draftsmen.
This engraving depicts a view taken from SAINT-SERVAN towards SAINT MALO and its port.
In the foreground stand two large windmills set on rocky ground, overlooking a path animated by small characters dressed in popular fashion. The middle ground is occupied by a vast expanse of water animated by numerous boats: sailboats, fishing boats and merchant ships sail past the ramparts and buildings. In the background appears the silhouette of Saint-Malo with its fortifications, quays and religious buildings recognizable by their domes and bell towers.
