After his labors and following the murder of Iphitos, Hercules is subjected by the oracle of Delphi to a year of servitude to atone for his guilt. Bought as an escalve by Omphale (Queen of Lydia), he performs a number of feats in her service to rid her kingdom of monsters (the cercopes) and brigands (the Itones). Admiring Hercules' strength and exploits, Omphale is said to have made him her lover, and even her husband after freeing him from servitude.
