Goldsmith's hallmark
Well inscribed on the reverse of the basin and the two grips [I S B under closed crown, the S being for Saumur].
In her notice, Monique Jacob indicates that two hallmarks are attributed to Jean Bérard. The first, recorded at the time of its reception in 1711 - ISBunder open crown - appears poorly struck on two pieces dated1715-1716 (letter D), suggesting rapid wear of the hallmark.punch. It would then have been replaced by a second, ISB under closedwhich Jacques Helft found in association with the letter-date Kand a Marque hallmark in use around 1728-1732 [Helft 1968, p. 62,n° 176].
However, our bowl, dated 1717-1718, allows us to anticipate the appearancethe appearance of this second hallmark. The remarkableof the imprint confirms that this was a newly-commissioned hallmark.recently put into service.
