Pierre Le Faguays Sculpture Art Deco Amazone Antiope Au Javelot Max Le Verrier
Antiope by Fayral, Art Deco sculpture in patinated metal, cast by the Max Le Verrier workshops
Beautiful Art Deco sculpture depicting Antiope, with taut body and nervous line. The composition is particularly elegant, with one leg thrown forward, the torso rotated, arms extended and javelin held horizontally. The short, pleated drape, elongated silhouette and tension of movement perfectly convey the refined, sporty aesthetic of the 1930s. The whole piece rests on a stepped pedestal in reconstituted stone, which further accentuates the architectural spirit typical of Art Deco.
This work aptly captures the major codes of the sculptor and the studio: athletic female figure, synthetic elegance, smooth modeling, green patina in the spirit of antiquity, sense of rhythm and stylization.
Antiope is a figure from Greek mythology. Depending on tradition, she appears as either a Theban princess or an Amazon. Her name evokes a noble, heroic and combative femininity, perfectly suited to this thrower subject, where classical grace meets modern energy. Art Deco period, the mythological reference here becomes a pretext for a representation of the idealized female body, dynamic and sovereign.
Very good overall condition. Beautiful green patina of the metal, very slight lack of patina on the upper right thigh. The reconstituted stone stepped base shows minor wear from use and slight missing on some edges, of no consequence to the overall presentation. Original javelin present. Very fine decorative sculpture by Pierre le Faguays, unsigned (the signature is usually engraved on the base, but commonly disappears over time), but whose authenticity cannot be disputed.
Dimensions: 40 x 46 x 10 cm.
